Precision SpecialtiesSpring washers are disks of metal that form an irregular shape, so that when the washer is loaded it acts like a spring and deflects, providing a preload between the two surfaces. There are many different spring washer types including belleville washers, bowed or curved washer, conical washers, finger washers, wave washers and adjustable spacers. Spring washers are primarily used in applications where manufacturing assemblies need a part to:

  • Take up play
  • Eliminate rattle
  • Maintain assembly tension
  • Compensate for expansion or contraction in materials after assembly
  • Absorb intermittent shock loads
  • Provide a controlled reaction under dynamic loads

Need a short run or special? Have an emergency? Give us a call today. Our complete in-house manufacturing facility will customize a solution to your exacting specifications.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Spring washers provide an easy way to compensate for differences in stacked tolerances or better known as “end play”. Spring washers also provide a low cost and an efficient solution for many of these following design requirements:

  • Compensating spring force
  • Preloading on a bearing
  • Constant tension on fasteners
  • Absorption of intermittent shocks from starting and stopping

What To Look For

When looking for a spring washer it is important to consider the correct size specifications your going to need including inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness, working weight and working load. Common materials of construction of spring washers include stainless steel, spring steel, nickel base alloy, copper base alloy or bronze. Each material has it’s own strengths and weaknesses and different materials may be better for different jobs.

Belleville Washers

Belleville Spring Washers work very much like compression Spring washers, but offer several advantages. Belleville Spring Washers can work in tight areas where space requirements may not offer a large range of motion. Belleville Spring Washers are typically used as springs, or to apply a pre-load or flexible quality to a bolted joint or bearing. Also, they can handle high stresses over this short area of motion. In most cases such as these, compression washers would fail.

The performance of a Belleville Spring Washers is based on the ratio of height to thickness. When this ratio is small, the springs will normally carry high loads at small deflections. Springs of this ratio will normally give a relatively constant or declining load.

Belleville Spring Washers are also known as conical spring washers and spherical spring washers and usually have a truncated sphere form. Belleville Spring Washers are usually made from a combination of beryllium copper, high carbon steel, spring temper phosphor bronze or stainless. As stated earlier, Belleville Spring Washers provide a very high load capacity often used in cases to solve spring problems of high loads, small deflections and limited space.

Stacking

Multiple Belleville Spring Washers may be stacked to modify the spring constant, or better known as the amount of deflection. Stacking Belleville Spring Washers in the same direction will add the spring constant in parallel, creating a stiffer joint. Stacking in different directions is similar to adding springs in series, resulting in a lower spring contact and a greater rate of deflection. Mixing and matching directions allows for the designing of a specific spring constant and deflection capacity.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Belleville Spring Washers, also known as Conical or Disc spring washers, provide the greatest load bearing capacity for their size. They compensate for joint expansion and contraction, spans holes and maintain high tension in screw and nut assemblies. By combining them in varying sequence, each size gives numerous load-carrying possibilities.

CURVED SPRING WASHERS

In today’s ever technologically evolving world, companies are always looking to develop their products with a smaller, more economical design. And it today’s world of smaller component design and miniaturization, Curved Spring Washers play a very important role. Curved Spring Washers have a distinct advantage over conventional wire spring washers, especially when weight and space is concerned.

Characteristics of Curved Spring Washers

  • Lighter loads characteristics
  • Near to linear spring constant
  • Function properly when the formed portions that make contact are ready to slide
  • Reduced Vibration
  • Higher deflection rate compared to other washers
  • Two point contact with high expansion capabilities under load

Product Description

Curved Spring Washers are commonly used for simple spring applications and exert relatively light thrust loads and are mostly used to lock washers for fasteners or absorb axial end play. The height of the form material can be adapted to any specific load/deflection function that you need.

Applications

  • Absorbing Vibrations
  • Controlling end pressure
  • Eliminating side & end play
  • Fasteners
  • Compensation for temperature changes

There are several size dies available. Please call, fax or email if you can’t locate the size you need. Stock sizes in high-carbon or stainless are also manufactures to all your specifications.

Wave Washers

Wave Spring Washers, also called Wave Spring Washers, are some of the best load bearing washers on the market today. Wave Spring Washers provide greater load bearing capability, primarily because of it’s three-point contact and sharper curve format. Wave Spring Washers are perfect for obtaining loads when the load gets static, or the working range is small so your axial space is limited. Wave Spring Washers can often times have three, four to sometimes even six waves a piece, even though any number of waves can be produced upon specification.

By increasing the number of waves, the thickness can ultimately be reduced for any given load. However it’s important to understand that every decreasing the amount of deflection causing an increase in radical stress. This is why wave uniformity is important because the load rate doesn’t begin until all the waves are evenly loaded.

Material

  • Stainless Steel 300 Series
  • 1050 Spring Steel
  • 1074 Spring Steel
  • 1095 Spring Steel
  • And Others

Product Description

Wave Spring Washers provide greater load-bearing capabilities and are primarily used in thrust-loading applications usually for small deflections and when the radial space is limited. The height and material thickness are used to regulate the load function and there are no sharp edges in place that will interfere. Also, stock sizes in high-carbon steel or stainless steel are manufactured to all your specifications.
