Variable Shims
Ever run into a situation where the shaft of the threaded shoulder bolt is either too long or too short for a specific application? Rather than shortening the shaft on a lathe or searching for a longer bolt, try variable shims (aka lengthening/shortening shims). Variable shims let you quickly increase the effective length of a bolt shaft by adding one or more small washer-like shims to the threaded end of the bolt, or you can shorten the effective length of the bolt threads by slipping one or more washer-like shims over the bolt shaft under the head before inserting the bolt into a hole.
