Washers are a common industrial fastener and machine component commonly used to distribute load and prevent unwanted movement in conjunction with another fastener such as a nut and bolt. The washer provides a large surface area for the head of the nut, and is typically made of soft carbon steel or nylon to accommodate this even pressure distribution.

Washers generally fall into three categories:

  • Plain and flat washers - used primarily for even load distribution and surface protection.
  • Wave and spring washers - compress under load and have axial flexibility, ideal for high-vibration uses to prevent unfastening.
  • Locking washers - used to prevent rotational loosening and unscrewing. Lock washers generally have locking teeth that grab the mating surfaces, and can also have wave properties like spring washers.
