Balls, Bearings, & Bushings
Machine bearings, bushings, and precision balls are a grouping of fastening components that facilitate controlled axial or rotational movement between a shaft and a surface. Bearings and bushings serve a similar function and sometimes go by interchangeable names. Both are simple, single-piece fasteners that absorb oil and lubricate a shaft to allow movement while providing support. However, ball bearings, also known as anti-friction bearings, have a hollow body that houses precision balls to create a rolling element.- Plain bearings include flange and sleeve bearings, which are also referred to as bushings
- Thrust bearings, also referred to as thrust washers, keep components aligned along a shaft
- Machine bushings resemble thrust bearings but feature less lubricity
