In 2000, the International Material Database System (IMDS) was developed by automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to create a web-based global data repository that includes all materials used in manufacturing automobiles that could be easily accessed and queried for reporting purposes. IMDS serves as the basis for ensuring that OEMs and their suppliers comply with environmental guidelines for both national and international standards. The creation of the IMDS was a collective effort initiated by Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, Opel, Porsche, Volvo, and Volkswagen; today more than 20 automotive OEMs participate.
Though originally developed and hosted by Electronic Data Systems (EDS), Hewlett-Packard currently owns and maintains IMDS.
Responsibilities
All Tier 1 suppliers are responsible for submitting data related to parts used in manufacturing for inclusion into the database regardless of where their finished automobiles are sold. Frequently, this responsibility is delegated to suppliers and sub tier suppliers. OEMs and suppliers must also comply with laws and regulations enacted to eliminate hazardous/dangerous substances from their products.
MDS and FMD
Upon request, Huyett will create and deliver Material Data Sheets (MDS), Full Material Disclosure (FMD) with homogeneous materials, substance identifiers, substance weight, and substance level exemptions, or original supplier Material Content Disclosure (MCD) to provide you with the substance content of the parts we manufacture and distribute.
Prohibited vs. Declarable Substances
Prohibited and declarable substances are materials considered to be harmful to humans or the environment during production, use, or when recycled. Prohibited substances are forbidden due to legal or internal regulation (e.g. hexavalent chromium). A Declarable substance is not prohibited from being used, but it must be made clear that the substance is in the part.
Huyett Can:
  • Create Material Data Sheets (MDS)
  • Create Modules
  • Revise & Modify Material Data Sheets
  • Provide coordination between our customers and our suppliers
  • Guide suppliers in creating IMDS for their products according to customer requirements
  • Analyze MDS already present in the IMDS
